For Thursday, February 23: Finding a Focal Point (Box 19)

For this activity, you need to review all the data you have collected and find the clusters of themes and patterns in your field site or topic (instructions on p. 193 in your text). By the way, did you know that the word "topic" comes from the Greek word topos, which means "place"? Now you know. So whether your "place" is geographical or metaphorical, this activity still works.

A major focal point in my research is the patient, or the resident, depending on the setting. The patient is the reason for any healthcare facility. All of the staff are trained and employed to care for the patient, and work to ensure a positive patient outcome. Some facilities have made capital benefits the main focus of their service, because it is, after all, a business. This is causing issues for those patients who cannot produce the capital needed to get healthcare at these facilities. The patients are the reason for the professions of registered nurses, nurse practitioners, nurse anesthetists, doctors, surgeons, etc. If there were no patients to take care of, there would be no healthcare professions or facilities.

  2. The focal points in my setting are the students. Without them the CAP building would not have a purpose. It exists to teach people how to become architects, landscape architects, or urban planners. They have to be in the space and use it as a way to create and use their creativity. With the projects they are all given, they help the students to go further in their career paths and hopefully closer to becoming an architect. By the students moving around and interacting with others, it is a perfect example of how working in a firm will be once they reach graduation. There aren’t any ways that my perspective can influence this action. I am also a contributor of the same thing. Therefore, instead of myself influencing other’s actions, I am simply contributing the same as any other person in the studio.

  3. My research has to main focal point is to understand my parents habits in eating healthy and why they prevented my brother and I from taking vitamins. There seems to be a controversy over vitamin and nutrient supplements verses whole foods such as meats, vegetables, and fruits. Vitamin and nutrient supplement is suppose to replace eating the foods that provide these nutrients. Although, in my research I find that a lot of people keep going into circles about these ideas. A lot of triathletes themselves propose that whole foods will fill you up and react better because you are filling your body with natural nutrients and will not crave other unhealthy carbohydrates. Hopefully finding an answer that settles these arguing opinions will give me a true answer of why I have never consumed any vitamins in my life.

  4. The main focal point of my research paper are children. I believe that children are the ones that are the most effected by the use of the Internet. The majority of my sources mainly focus on these effects. I think my own perspective plays a slight role because I am more apt to look for the negative sides of Internet usage in children because I believe that these negatives effects are the most prevalent. While this is my belief some of my research points out the benefits. Due to this I will have to keep an open mind so that my paper does not become one sided.

  5. The main focal points within my research are the pregnant women. They are the source behind alcohol and drug induced diseases and genetic mutations, like Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. The majority of my sources focus on the harsh effects on the fetus from a large consumption of alcohol or drugs, like Marijuana, during pregnancy. After taking numerous child development classes and being educated on the prevention of alcohol and drug abuse, I am inclined to agree with the research presented within my sources. However, I plan to research on the ideals behind alcohol and drug consumption during pregnancy prior to all the research and statistics that we have today to ensure an unbiased mind set.

  6. My main focal point for my paper is the terminally ill patient that is being discriminated against. My whole paper will basically focus on why the patient's needs are not being met the first time, thus leading to re-admittance. Mortality rates and financial problems in relation to the hospital will be discussed. I want to discover how the hospitals work to cut costs, and how their cost efficiency care plan effects the patient's overall wellness. The patient must be the main focus because without them, not one of the medical professionals involved would have a job.

  7. My main focal point will be the connection of the typical western diet and how it effects our chances of developing certain chronic diseases. I will be researching how a plant-based diet has been shown to work against these diseases to prevent and even reverse these negative effects on the body. I hope to inform the reader of the enormous positive impacts a plant-based diet can have on your health. I believe the main focus has to be the American western diet because a lot of people have no idea about the process their food undergoes before they buy it at the store. American's fill up on processed and fast food and believe that the food they are preparing at home is "healthy" or "nutritious", when in reality they are lacking essential vitamins and minerals and filling up on empty calories which in the long run leaves them with cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and other illnesses.

  8. I have found multiple contradictions in my research. The one that relates most to my topic is the Winter Soldier convention. Winter Soldier was an event held by Vietnam veterans to protest the Vietnam War. Another event was recently held to oppose the war in Iraq. Veterans testify of the war crimes they participated in and saw, which would definitely contribute to mental health issues. The frequency of these crimes and the honesty of the eyewitnesses are unknown though. When the military investigated the testimonies given at the Winter Soldier against Vietnam, most of them were proven false, and some veterans denied they ever testified. This could be just another scam to turn the public against the military. There will always be people that oppose the war, which does not help the soldiers cope with their experiences.

The main focal point of my research is media and advertising. For some reason, media and advertisements have the ability to influence people. Obviously, influencing people can be in multiple different ways whether that is to purchase a product or act a certain way. However, why advertisements and media feel the need to use sex as a means of connecting with the public is often misunderstood. Do they do it to attract attention or simply because sex sells? Sex is literally everywhere and how people understand that depends on the person. I plan to look more in detail about the topic and see how society and the general public views sex in advertising and media.

  10. The focal point of my research is the wife. Through out American history women have had to fight for the rights men were born with. While many people know the obvious women rights that were fought for like voting, there are many marriage rights that were limited to women. In fact, women were essentially dependent upon their husband because they had so little rights outside of their marriage. In my research, I plan to investigate the history of women's rights in marriage and find what women had to go through to come to the point we are today.

  11. The focal point of my paper will be New Orleans. This is a logical focus because it was the location of the melding of styles of music to create jazz. Jazz really could not have started anywhere else because of the very specific circumstances that arose in the late 1800's to the early 1900's that created it. I will examine the relatively liberal people and culture in New Orleans during this time period.

  12. The main focal point of my paper will be the families who are affected by corporate relocation. Many companies corporately relocate, and this is an issue that is close to the hearts of many people. I will look into how relocations impact families, especially children. I have a few sources that give first hand examples of how families deal with corporate relocations. Personally, I know how hard it was on my mother to move around a lot as a child, and I think that will have an impact on my stance in this research paper. I can also see the other side of the argument as well, because I am interested in the Human Resources field, and many of these relocations are done because they are good business decisions.

  13. The focal point of my paper is the psyche of the African American in today's society. I am not explaining the mentality of the African American. I am merely analyzing and justifying why it is so fragile. My primary resources are books and historical documents. I understand that my issue is very sensitive, however it should not be controversial. I will state facts and only offer opinion regarding the African American race. Therefore, if one is not African American my opinion should not be offensive. If you are African American my opinion should be enlightening.

  14. My focal point to my research paper is communication. It is an every day occurrence that we participate in. I will be looking into how certain situations influence the ways people communicate such as nurse patient communication. I want to discover specifically how it has changed over time to accommodate to health care changes along with patient needs.

  15. The focal point for my research is mental illnesses. Throughout my research I have noticed many reoccurring themes with the parallels between religious beliefs and the impacts they have on patient's mental well-being and recovery from mental illnesses. I have also noticed many reoccurring authors and medical experts research throughout my findings. Dr. Keoing's research has mad many appearances throughout several of my chosen articles and books on the topic of religion and mental health. Through my research I plan to discover the direct impacts of religion on mental illness and if it poses possible cures for mental health issues.

  16. After reading and analyzing my sources, I have discovered that a main focal point is a debate between the moral and ethical challenges that designer babies pose. Many believe that they should be allowed to be created, while a more pressing percentage of the research points to not creating designer babies. A huge challenge in overcoming lays in religion I believe.

  17. The focal point of my paper is vaccines and their impact on children. There are many contradictions in my research. Some people say that vaccines are very safe while others do not believe this.

  18. The focal point of my paper is genealogy. During my research I have found that my resources all explain what genealogy is and how to research it. The basic process can seem very overwhelming, but by breaking down each step it is more simple. Genealogy has recently become important in the health field. It is very helpful for someone to know what diseases they may be susceptible to, which is a step in researching genealogy.

  19. My focal point to my research paper is the role of the Inca’s government organization. I will be looking into how that administration was able to control such a huge and diverse territory. I’ll be looking into the duty of each member of Inca Empire its effect. So far I found that Inca administration was sort of was a totalitarian, so they watched and controled every single step of their population. From my reading and my own experience—in my country--I know that this type of administration inspires fear and obedience among its people, so that people can be easily dominated.

  20. My main focal point to my research paper is the positive effects of the legalization of marijuana in a financial aspect. I will be looking up the amount of money spent annually for drug busts and spec. ops. training. I have so far found out that the simple taxation of marijuana when sold publicly would add a substantial amount of profit to national income through taxation. The nation-wide statistics will be my most useful tool with this research as i will have reliable .gov and .edu sources with strongly supported evidence and statistics.

  21. Obviously, if one is writing about Quakers, a focal point could be as broad as the humans that make up the Quaker church, and as narrow as a single sermon. I'm sticking to the middle of the road for this: I'll focus (for now) on the concept of silence. The Quakers are such big proponents of this concept, and it seems like such a strange thing, but if you grew up in a church that's outside the Society of Friends, you probably don't remember much of your worship being based in a time of silence broken only by the occasional exhortation or mini-sermon by a member of the congregation. It's something that has to be learned and at times, wrestled with, silence. I'd encourage you to try sometime, Christian or not: just try to still your mind and be calm (without falling asleep!) for a few minutes. And you thought silence meant you weren't doing anything: you'll likely struggle through the exercise, but after a few tries of my own, I believe the Quakers must be onto something.
