Exploratory Writing (Box 4)

At this point, you have conducted two interviews and written your first draft of an essay synthesizing the information you learned from those primary sources. You may have decided to explore the topic that has emerged from your interviews, or you may want to embark on an entirely new inquiry. Whatever choice you have made, start writing about where you want to go next. Use the questions on page 62 of your textbook to prompt your writing activity: Just get some ideas down and post them here.

  1. After interviewing my grandparents about their struggle and marriage, I feel as though I have exhausted the topic. Though I did get a great amount of detail and perfect descriptions for my essay, I would like to go in a different direction from here on out.
As for outsiders entering the subculture, I would say interview a married couple you are close with. Many, if not all, questions I asked were very personal and I would most definitely not have felt comfortable asking them if we did not know each other.
For future topics, I want to focus mainly on cancer. I am fascinated with it's preventions, the doctor's standpoints, and helping people with the disease. I have captained teams for Relay For Life in the past and continue to do so, so this information would be very beneficial to my hobby of contributing to the American Cancer Society.

  2. Through interviewing Muhamed I have learned so much new information, but it is not something that i would want to expand on anymore. With this course, I want to lean towards medical issues, on in particular. I want to explore the idea of genetic engineering, understand how it works, what it takes to accomplish. And after that I think I will head towards designer babies. I know that they are made through genetically engineering sperm and an egg, to get the traits and characteristics that the parents want. There will be a large moral and ethical debate somewhere in there and though it is a medical issue, I am against it out front. Some outsiders think of it as a way o enhance their genes and only pass on a few characteristics, while others are positioned against it and everything it means.

  3. For me it hard to pull out a topic out of my mind, so that I would like to keep going with things related with foreign language education.

Mainstreaming or inclusion, theories about second language acquisition, different methods foreign language teachers use in their classrooms, and how adolescents learn are some of the issues I would like to dig a little bit deeper.

To find answers to these aspects of education, I will conduct interviews and use books and research studies.

  4. Shannon's post:

I think I may actually continue on with my topic. I was really fascinated when I interviewed my sister and I think it is a great way to learn more about my chosen major. I think it helps the interview process that my sister and I are so close because she felt comfortable answering my questions even if her answers were nerdy. I think the fact that I know a bit about public relations makes me less of an outsider maybe just inexperienced. I want to learn more about what Public Relations through this process!

    1. I will continue to expand on my topic. I want to examine the psyche of African American in today's society. I will examine this issue in a refreshing and innovating way. I will expose this issue with an amalgamation of psychology, philosophy, economics, and history. The majority of my academic sources will be books. However, I bear the sole responsibility of clarifying this theory to my audience.

  5. After interviewing my grandmother, I have decided to continue on with my topic after being intrigued by an array of responses to questions that I had. There are multitudinous directions that I can take to expand my topic on the comparison of pregnancies during the 1950's and 60's to today. For example, I can talk about the introduction of ideas presented by theorists, like Piaget, or the discovery of different developmental diseases. Research will be conducted through medical books, journals, and more extensive interviews.

  6. 1. I already know a lot about architecture, design, and creativity but I would say that I know the most about architecture. This is simply because I have had four years of education on the subject. Last semester however, I took interior design classes. Some insiders I know are my high school drafting teacher who is also a practicing architect, Naji Ropkey, and the instructors that I have at Ball State.
    2. After the interview the only new connection I have is with Naji. I had not known her before and only know her now because my aunt introduced us.
    3. It would be impossible to enter in architecture as an outsider, especially not if you have not had any knowledge on it. You could, however enter into it as just searching for information, but not actually performing tasks.
    4. I would consider myself an insider. I have so much past experience, and current experience, in both architecture and creativity. The only way I wouldn’t consider myself a “full insider” is because I am not certified.
    5. I hope to find out more about how other people perceive creativity and design as a major aspect to architecture, and also how important those concepts are for an architect. Some other topics that I might research would be sustainability and how someone in a similar field would deal with organization, multi-tasking, problem solving, and marketing themselves. It would be interesting to see how people from similar, yet non related, fields define certain concepts and possible come to similar agreements on certain subjects. I would like to have a majority of my sources from getting people's own opinions. Some other research will also just be on the career of an architect.

  7. Triathlete’s subcultures are diverse because of the type of food they eat and the amount of hours they put in to working out. Triathlete’s are constantly trying to get a better time during each race, which may consists of swimming, running, and biking. My mom and dad both race during weekends or whenever they are striving to become a better racer.
Since both my mom and dad dragged my brother and I along to races each weekend; I have met dozens of different people from multiple countries. The people I have met are from Japan, China, Germany, Russia, and people from all over the United States. These athletes all have different ideas of how to perform during these tough endurance races.
The difficulty for becoming a racer myself would not be too difficult considering I have grown up with Triathletes for nineteen years of my life. I would begin training by swimming twice a week. Next, I would spend most my days running. Lastly, on weekends I would plan out very different bike courses since there all different in each race. People who have never known of this sport may not even know where to begin. To begin you must become fit and change your entire diet.
I am both an insider and outsider in this sub culture. I have raced in a few Triathlons when I was younger, but I have never participated in the older age group divisions. To become a part of this sub culture again I would have to change my diet, work out endlessly, and track my times while training. My family has brought me up in this idea of being healthy and fit it can be a wonderful challenge.
Triathlons are an experience that is very demanding and difficult to put forth too. This sport must have a lot of commitment to become good enough to win. I want to figure out how to be committed enough? Perhaps a challenging sport, but well worth the feeling of accomplishment at the end of each race. To me this sport is a challenge of commitment.

  8. I believe I would like to continue on with a similar subject to my previous one. Whereas my last subject was specifically women in jazz, I now want to explore the history of the music itself. I also have a passion for blues music so I would like to study the transition from simple blues music to the more complex jazz forms. I will probably briefly touch on the different cities where the styles were thought to have evolved and some of the musicians who were instrumental in the transition. As the subculture I am trying to study is at least 120 years old, I consider myself an outsider. I hope to gain some insight into the specific alterations that make the two styles distinct (among other topics).

  9. After interviewing Julia Buben on her career as a nurse and her experience on medical mission trips, I have decided to continue on this course topic. Because I am a nursing major, I have a passionate interest and general knowledge of the medical field. Through my interview process, Julia exposed certain aspects of her profession that particularly sparked my intrigue. With further understanding of Julia's interaction with her patients, I began to wonder how aspects of her personal life transcends through her work, especially with her patients. The main aspect I wondered about was her faith. Through this interest I feel lead and interested in researching the effects of religion on certain aspects. I haven't yet decided whether or not I will pursue research on the direct conflicts between the implication of religious aspects on the scientific practices in the medical field or if I will research the effects religion has on a patients individual health and recovery. Either way, I am interested on what I will find out because those are both topics in which I don't have much knowledge on.

  10. I will probably continue with my topic from the interview paper. I remember my parents telling me that due to the Mennonites’ practice of non-resistance, they were persecuted for a long time. I would like to research more about that. I think both the Mennonites and Amish came from the Anabaptists during the reformation, but don’t know all the details. I have experienced some aspects of the Mennonites through my father’s side of the family. I would also like to research Martin Luther and the thesis he wrote, which changed religion and the church dramatically. During this time, the church took some ideas from rationalism. There were more denominations that branch from the Anabaptists, but I will only focus on a couple.

  11. For the research paper I want to change my topic to vaccinations. There is controversy over if they should be used or not, and I would like to know more about the reasons for both opinions. Also, just to have more knowledge about the manufacturing of the vaccines. I am a nursing major, so I think that knowledge will help me in my future and to form my own opinion on the topic.

  12. After interviewing my grandparents about our family genealogy I have decided to continue with this topic. I can continue to learn about my own family history and even other aspects of genealogy. I can research how tracing family history has changed in the past, with my grandparents' experience as a primary example. I could also discuss the different methods of tracing back family history. I could even go into more detail about what information is needed to trace back family members and the whole process. I know that I can find plenty of areas to expand with this topic.

  13. After interviewing my friend Saadia on how weddings in her culture are different than the typical wedding most Americans would imagine, I was very intrigued by the differences and the reasons for those diffences. Because of my interest in the topic, I have decided to further my research on the topic for my research paper. I hope to explore other cultures and learn more about how different cultures do weddings. I am excited to learn the differences and actually excited to write a research paper for the first time!

  14. I originally went into interviewing my dad on Greek life for the sole purpose of a single paper. However, after getting more in-depth with the questions and hearing what he had to say about it all, I have decided to stay in that topic and focus on a specific part of the Greek life and its role on college campuses, mostly the pledges-ship and initiation rights/requirements.. I will next be interviewing my uncle who, unlike my dad, was involved in the Greek community in college and get his opinion on the whole community.

  15. After interviewing Lisa I decided to stay with my topic for my upcoming research paper, since I already have an insiders perspective and know a lot about the subculture. I hope to inform the readers about all the wonderful health benefits that can come from a vegan diet and fully explain everything that contributes to a vegan and cruelty free lifestyle. I will be supporting my research with medical studies and books that compare and contrast plant based diets with America's western diet and how it relates to disease preventing and healthier living. I will also focus some on the ethical treatment of animals using documented cases and current methods of treatment of animals today in factory farms. I hope to help the readers make the connection of farm animals and their pets that they love.

  16. Interviewing Mam really drew my interest to the town of Milltown. Her stories of how tightly knit the community was and how bustling the town used be and growing up in my time with economic decline made me wonder how the town came to be what it was and how it transformed to now. My dad is also the 'Mayor' of Milltown and he knows a lot about what is going on in the town right now. There are plenty of people to interview about the life back then and now as well as archival information waiting to be found in the Town Hall and residents belongings. Like you said if I don't do it then who knows who ever will.

  17. After my interview with my mom I have decided to expand on my topic for my research paper. I have learned a lot and my interest has grown in my topic. I have more connections with my topic because I know many of my mothers colleges. I have decided to further my topic into the language used in hospitals with patients. I hope to find out how this language is different then normal language.

  18. My interviews with my pastor and a woman who's been part of our church for nearly thirty years now have prompted me to continue my research on the Society Friends (a.k.a. the Quakers), with a focus on newer generations: both their response to Quakerism and the Quaker church's relationship with them. I hope to gain some knowledge and formulate well-informed opinions about my denomination and the propagation thereof.

  19. For my research paper I am going to further explore my interview topic of computers and the Internet. I specifically want to research the affects that Internet has on today’s youth. I am Interested in seeing exactly what benefits and disadvantages it poses. I believe that I will find that the being exposed to the Internet at such a young age will have many drawbacks, and I wish to expose what these are.
